Supporting Cochise County Superintendent of Schools project to provide stock inhalers to schools throughout Cochise County

January, 2020

Asthma has been described as feeling like a fish out of water gasping for breath. Asthma along with other respiratory distress is the leading cause of calls by schools to 9-1-1 and emergency transportation from schools. Children with asthma often do not have an inhaler, the medication that helps them breathe, with them at school. This can result in children having to miss out on school and parents having to leave work to pick up their child.

Now, thanks to Arizona House Bill 2208 passed in March 2017, schools in Arizona can provide stock inhalers in the school to students in respiratory distress. Providing medication onsite to relieve respiratory distress helps children quickly breathe easier, stay in school, and parents stay at work.

The Legacy Foundation funded $3000 towards the Stock Inhaler Project to provide stock inhalers, holding chambers, and to print binder instructions and protocols.Jacqui Clay, Superintendent of Cochise County Schools, will roll out the project at the Innovations in Education Conference January 24th and 25th, 2020.
